Jewelry Care

Storing and Cleaning

Sterling silver jewelry will tarnish over time, so it is best to store it in a dark, dry place. Keeping your sterling silver jewelry in an airtight bag along with an anti-tarnishing strip works well. To clean your jewelry, I recommend using a Sunshine Polishing Cloth to gently wipe away tarnish and bring your sterling silver to its original finish.

It is always a good idea to let any lotion or perfume dry completely before your jewelry comes in contact with it; that will help minimize tarnishing. It is also a good idea to remove your sterling silver jewelry before swimming or soaking in a hot tub or natural hot springs.

FAQs

What is sterling silver?

-Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of other metals, primarily copper.

What is pure silver?

-Pure silver is 99.9% silver, and is often referred to as fine silver.

What is oxidization?

-All silver naturally oxides over time as it comes into contact with air. I use liver of sulfur to darken sterling silver (and occasionally copper) and give it an antiqued appearance. This fine coating can also be referred to as a patina.

How do I determine my ring size?

-The internet is full of ideas about this, most of them using string or paper to measure your finger. I'm not a fan of these approaches because they yield inaccurate results. Your best bet is to go to a jewelry store or a bead shop and ask them to measure your ring with a ring sizer. You should also specify whether you are measuring for a thin ring band or a wide one, as there is a different sizer for both, and your ring size may vary depending on the width of the ring band that you want (it's mostly about your knuckle!).

Which size of a bangle or cuff will fit me? What is the difference between a bangle and a cuff?

-This is one part wrist (or hand) size and one part personal preference. You want your bangle to stay on while wearing it, and you may prefer a rather snug fitting cuff over a loose one, depending on its design.

For a bangle, which is circular in shape, tuck your thumb into your palm and measure the widest part of your hand in centimeters.  The circumference of the bangle should be close to the circumference of your hand measurement. The bangle should just barely fit over the largest part of your hand so that it doesn't fall of when you're wearing it. Look for the measurement of my bangle bracelets in the description of each item. If you need a different size than what is offered, send me a note via the Contact page and I'll be happy to fill as special order.

There is more leeway for a cuff, which is a "C" shape, depending on your personal preferences. You may want a cuff to fit fairly snugly if it

has a unique design or a bezel-set stone on its center. An odd shaped wrist, like mine, may also require a snugger fit so the cuff doesn't get askew while wearing it. Some of you may like a cuff that moves more freely up and down your wrist. I offer three sizes of cuffs:

Small: 16cm

Medium: 17cm

Large: 18cm

For a snug fitting cuff, order one that is 5-10cm smaller than your wrist. For a cuff that has a bit more of a comfort fit, order one that is the

same size as your wrist. For example, my wrist measures 17cm in circumference, and a 16mm cuff fits me snugly. A 17mm cuff can move up

and down my wrist a bit without spinning around or getting askew.

You can adjust a cuff a bit by hand, pushing the sides closer together or pulling them apart a little more, as needed. If you need a different sized cuff, drop me a note on the Contact page, and I'll be happy to accommodate a custom order.
